If you've always been curious about carriage driving but aren't quite sure what to expect, you're not alone. Many people arrive for their first lesson feeling a little nervous, wondering if they'll be able to do it.

The good news is that you don't need any previous experience. Whether you've ridden horses all your life or have never held a pair of reins before, your lesson will be tailored to you.

At South Wales Carriage Driving Centre, our aim is to help you feel relaxed, confident and enjoy every moment of learning this fascinating sport.

A Warm Welcome

When you arrive, we'll take the time to get to know you. We'll chat about any previous experience you may have with horses, what you'd like to achieve, and answer any questions before we begin.

There's no rush. We want you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive.

Meet Your Horse

You'll be introduced to one of our calm, experienced horses or ponies, carefully chosen to suit beginners.

You'll learn about their temperament, how they are prepared for driving, and why each piece of harness is important. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with the equipment before climbing aboard.

Safety Comes First

Carriage driving is an enjoyable and rewarding sport, but like any equestrian activity, safety is essential.

Before you start driving, we'll explain everything clearly, including:

• How to hold the reins correctly.

• How to use the whip safely and effectively.

• How to communicate with your horse.

• How to sit comfortably and correctly on the carriage.

• Basic safety procedures.

Don't worry if it all feels new—we'll guide you every step of the way.

Time to Drive

Now comes the exciting part!

You'll take the reins and begin driving in our safe arena with your instructor beside you. We start at a pace that suits you, building confidence from the very beginning.

During your lesson you'll learn:

• How to move off smoothly.

• Steering accurately.

• Maintaining a steady rhythm.

• Halting correctly.

• Beginning to understand how the horse responds to your aids.

As your confidence grows, you'll progress naturally throughout the lesson.

Learn at Your Own Pace

Everyone learns differently.

Some people are confident straight away, while others prefer to take things more slowly. There is no pressure and no expectation to reach a particular standard during your first lesson.

The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself and leave feeling more confident than when you arrived.

What Should I Wear?

We recommend:

• Comfortable clothing suitable for the weather.

• Sturdy footwear with a small heel.

• Gloves if you have them.

• A waterproof jacket if rain is forecast.

If you own a riding hat, you're welcome to bring it, although we also have hats available to borrow.
